The 4th Annual Chief Scientific Officer’s Conference and
Healthcare Scientist of the Year Awards

27th and 28th November, Holiday Inn Regent’s Park, London

DELIVERING A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

This is to remind you about this year's Chief Scientific Officer's Conference that will be hosted by journalist and TV presenter, Vivienne Parry and builds on the success of previous years. Please kindly ensure you formally register online at www.glasgows.co.uk/cso2007 to secure your place. Capacity at the venue is limited therefore places will need to be allocated on a first come first served basis.

The conference is widely recognised as the key platform for the promotion of healthcare scientists and the contribution of science to more effective healthcare delivery. Attendance is strongly recommended.

Further details of the programme have now been updated on the web site. Topics include plenaries covering the NHS reform agenda, research and innovation, science futures, emergency planning and building a world class workforce as well as workshops and the opportunity to network.

We have some truly outstanding speakers confirmed. David Nicholson CBE, NHS Chief Executive will outline his vision for the NHS and take questions from the audience. Dr Russell Hamilton, Deputy Director of R&D at the Department of Health and Dr Maire Smith, Director of Innovation at the NHS Institute of Innovation and Improvement will discuss how research and innovation are at the centre of evidence based healthcare. On day two, Dr David Harper, Chief Scientist at the Department of Health will demonstrate how the UK is leading the world on health protection, focusing specifically on the issues surrounding Avian Flu. Emergency planning will also be addressed in a presentation from Dr Penny Bevan, Director at the Department of Health. And, from theory to reality, Dr John Cooper, Deputy Director of the HPA Radiation Protection Division, and closely involved in the Polonium 210 incident, will be outlining the science behind the headlines of this dramatic event. There will also be a session dedicated to building a world class workforce and services responsive to needs and challenges, with contributions from, among others, Dame Gill Morgan, Chair, NHS Confederation.

In addition to the Departmental speakers, we also have contributions from a number of accomplished scientists. Professor Kathy Sykes, physicist and presenter of BBC TV's Rough Science will join the innovation session along with Graham Spittle, who heads up IBM's Dursley Labs and also chairs the Technology Strategy Board. Lord Winston together with former Reith Lecturer and professor of gerontology, Tom Kirkwood, will be talking about cutting edge science at the beginning and end of life respectively. Professor Jeremy Baumberg who leads a £4million EPSRC Nanophotonics programme at the University of Southampton will be taking a peek into the far future and how nanoscience might affect the work of healthcare science and finally, with an eye to the Olympics, now just five years away, Professor Ron Maughan of Loughborough University will be looking at what the sports science of 2012 may involve and how it might impact on laboratories and on us less than fit mortals in the future.

Finally we are delighted to have secured the inspirational speaker Professor Geraint Rees from the Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience at University College London. Professor Rees who is also the 2007 Francis Crick Lecturer at the Royal Society, will deliver a keynote address 'Paying Attention'.

Further details on the event, including details of delegate fees can be found by visiting www.glasgows.co.uk/cso2007 .

The annual Healthcare Scientist of the Year Awards will take place on the evening of Tuesday 27th November. The categories and application form can be accessed by logging onto www.glasgows.co.uk/cso2007 . Please download these now to allow plenty of time for submission. Last year's winners provided outstanding examples of good practice that were widely praised by the Department of Health.

I recommend you continue to monitor the web site for further programme updates and look forward to seeing you in November.

With kind regards
